The default sizes for VCM virtual machines are designed to handle typical workloads, but we recognize that this may not be sufficient for some student projects, research, or coursework.

Student projects

Students who believe they need a VM with more resources should discuss this with their faculty. If the faculty member concurs that additional resources are needed, the faculty member can forward the request to the OIT Service Desk on your behalf.

Research

For researchers, an alternative to VCM is the Research Toolkits/RAPID VM service. Regular rank Duke faculty are provided a basic allocation and can augment this allocation with additional compute resources, delegate control of the compute resource allocation and provision customized VM configurations. For details see: https://rtoolkits.web.duke.edu/home/learn_more

Courses

For faculty who need larger VMs for a class they are teaching, we are happy to work out how to accommodate special course-specific VMs. We need to know what the desired VM size is and how many students will be in the class, and these request should be made with as much lead time as possible.
